Brands Hatch: A weekend at the races

Yesterday I went to Brands Hatch Circuit to see what's doing.

It was a Formula Ford Festival weekend.

In addition to the regular Formula Ford Races, there were also Classic Formula Ford Categories, Local championships, and Caterham Super Seven Championship rounds.

Because of the Super Seven races, there were dozens of Super Sevens all around the place. A dream!

There's a 1600 category, where the competing cars are all road legal and with numberplates on, and there's the R400 category: 1800cc Rover engine with 200 bhp on 500 Kilos, which explains the name: 400 bhp per ton

The Super Seven races were a lot more fun to watch than the Formula Ford.

The Cars are almost as fast (53 sec for the 1600 and 51 for the

1800

compared with 48 for the Formula Fords) but they slide a lot more and the racing was much closer, with less than two hundreths of a second separating the winners in two races.

The historic Formula Fords sounded brilliant. They're still running with carbs, and there were wonderful backfiring noises all the time.

Of course there were interesting cars all around the car park.

I drove to the track in a Rover 200CVT.

The CVT gearbox is an excellent idea, and it's well carried out except for a bit of shunting when braking quickly to a stop.

Usually the revs go down as much as possible as soon as you let go of the gas pedal, but if you put the lever in the 'L' position, the revs stay around the torque peak which should be good for sporty driving.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to find some B roads to try out the car properly, so all I can report is that the engine is very eager and that the seat is comfortable.

Ride comfort is fair. Not at French levels, but way better than a Lantis.

יופי של תמונות ויופי של דיווח, תודה ג'רמי. אנגלית מצויינת, אגב

נראה לי שמירוצי הקייטרהם צמודים כל כך בגלל האווירודינמיקה האיומה של המכונית - הן עושות "חור" ענקי באוויר והמכונית שמאחור מרוויחה מזה די הרבה מהירות.

ג'רמי, איפה בדיוק ישבת? זו פניית בארי שין החדשה?

הסבר נוסף למירוץ הצמוד זה שהמכוניות זהות בבסיסם.

אמנם גם לפורמולה פורד יש מנועים זהים, אבל יש הבדלים גדולים בשלדות.

המסלול שהיה בשימוש היה מסלולה "Indy Circuit" שלא כולל את השלוחה הארוכה.

אני הסתובבתי מסביב למסלול וצילמתי מכמה מקומות החל מסוף brabham straight שזה ה Start-Finish Straight.

אח"כ התקדמתי ל Paddock hill bend שזה בסוף הישורת (שם התמונה של הקייטרהאמים על המסלול), עליתי את העלייה של Hailwood Hill (שם צילמתי אחד מהסרטונים) וגיוונתי בכל מיני עמדות בפניית Druids, והייתי גם בצד הפנימי של Graham Hill Bend שם היתה נקודת תצפית מצויינת של היציאה מ Druids (משם צילמתי את הסרטון השני).

יש עוד הרבה תמונות, אבל אני העליתי רק את המוצלחות יותר.

המצלמה שלי לא ממש מתאימה לצילומי אקשן של ספורט מוטורי. בפעם הבאה אני אקח את ה SLR הישן והטוב, עם פילם אמיתי שצריך לפתח אותו.....

וואללה, זו פאדוק היל? זכרתי אותה הרבה יותר תלולה, כנראה הזווית שממנה צילמת גורמת לפנייה להיראות שטוחה יותר. חתיכת פנייה מפחידה...
