I'm the owner of a 1948 Indian Chief, engine number CDH 7073 , which is supposed to have come from Israel.

 

The basic story is that it was imported into Melbourne by an Israeli chap who emigrated to Australia. This was probably in 1992. It passed through several hands, before I bought it in pieces in 1993. After 3 years of restoration, it finally hit the road in 1997. As you can guess from this time frame, a lot of work had to be done !

 

Unfortunately the identity of the Israeli owner is lost, so the important part of it's Australian story is gone too. I was doubtful of the Israel connection until I started restoring the speedometer. The face of the speedo had been cleaned back to bare brass, and metric markings had been hand drawn on it. On the rear of the speedo was some writing that I couldn't decipher. I sent a copy of this to a Jewish information service here in Perth, and they told me that it said ;

 

“A. Malchi, Tel Aviv, Givat Herzl 103”.

 

Nearby is a date scratched into the brass, “9.4.56”.

 

I'm assuming that this is an instrument technician who worked on the speedo in Israel in 1956. This is the first hard proof that I have that the motorcycle really did come from Israel !

 

I then wrote to the Israel Defence Force museum, asking about military Indians. I received a reply saying that some 1948 Indians were donated to the Tel Hashomer Hospital. They were too large for the riders, and were exchanged with the military for smaller bikes. The Indians were then used on President Weizmann’s escort duties. These are the photographs that you will doubtless have seen in the State of Israel's national photo collection ;

Now Keith has learnt that the engine numbers beginning with 7 are from some kind of special production run. Very interesting ! Do you have the engine numbers of the 1948 Chiefs there, that are known to be Israeli bikes ? We are hoping to discover if they are consecutive or in some way grouped together.

 

I'm attaching a photograph of my 48, taken when the restoration was completed.

 

Irit, I do hope you are able to take all this in, and I do hope that we can all learn something about our cherished motorcycles. I wrote many emails and letters in the 1990's regarding this, but yours is the first contact that actually knows something of the "lost tribe" today !

אירית - הסיפור על ישראלי שהוציא אינדיאן מהארץ לאוסטרליה הוא סיפור די ידוע, רק לא ידעתי שהוא מכר אותו שם .

 

אני רק מקווה שביום מן הימים הוא יוחזר לארץ - וטיפ קטן, היות והוא היה ישראלי בעברו ויש לו מס' רישוי, אזי הוא לא ידרש לתשלום מכס!
